Not sure what’s keeping your baby up at night? Our detailed guide about baby’s sleep is everything you’ll ever need.
Becoming a parent is one of the best experiences of anyone’s life. A child’s sleep is an important issue, and every parent goes through a tough time during the initial months when the baby is born.
To make your life easier, we are here presenting some of the facts that every new parent needs to understand.
Getting your baby comfy
All babies have different sleeping patterns and hence different sleep likings. Some infants like a cooler room for sleeping while some doze off when it is warmer.
Swaddling is usually an activity which most of the infants love, but there are also few exceptions as not all children like to be wrapped around in bundles of clothes.
So you will have to take some time to figure out your baby’s preferences, and these factors will make you understand what makes your child comfortable. Long story short for a good night sleeps comfort the most important factor.
Duration of sleep
As compared to the sleep cycle of adults, infant’s sleep cycles are very short. An infant’s sleep cycle usually last between 60-75 minutes which makes them wake up often.
So, if your baby wakes up an hour after sleeping, they are usually waking up mid-nap. Your job should be now to calm your baby and lull him back to sleep.
Take utmost care of the position
Baby’s sleeping position is one of the things that parents tend to overlook. In fact, it is the most important aspect to look out for. Your child should never be allowed to sleep on his/her stomach as this can cause Sudden infant death syndrome(SIDS).
Babies tend to roll on their sides to sleep, but the recommended position for the perfect sleep is to lie them down on their backs.
Moms – Choose your food wisely
Every mother has to feed her child, so it is important that you take utmost care of your food habits.
Some babies don’t mind the little dose of caffeine in their mommy’s diet, but some don’t tolerate it well. Keep a watch on how much coffee you drink as a little extra dose of caffeine might disturb their sleeping habits.
Therefore, mothers need to be self-disciplined regarding their diet as follow a balanced nutrient rich diet.
You cannot force them to sleep at night
We as adults have 80% of quiet sleep throughout the night. Sleeping pattern of a newborn is completely different. Infants have the majority of restless sleep in their initial years.
By active sleep I mean the infants’ eyes are closed, but their eyelids continue to move, breathing remains inconsistent, their hands keep twitching, and they give out sleeping grins.
Therefore, until your baby is 6-7 months, be prepared for short 60 minute cycles and don’t try to force them for long hours. It is not healthy either.
So these are the five things that every parent should know about their baby, apart from this here is a list four can’t go wrong tips which can prove to be of tremendous help, especially for the first-time parent. –
- Babies need to be parented to sleep, not just put to sleep
- Some children need help getting back to sleep
- Encouraging a baby to sleep too deeply, too soon, may not be the best survival or developmental interest of the baby
- An important fact for you to remember is that your infant’s sleep habits are more a reflection of your baby’s temperament rather than your style of nighttime parenting.
Overall you have to understand that parenting is a full-time job. You will lose hours of sleep, will be tired all day, but the amazing feeling of seeing your child smile and grow every day will keep you going.
